LED 101 – DIP LED Technology

Dual In-Line Package (DIP) technology has began to fade as SMD technology (discussed in next video) continues to progress. Still, those who work with LED display technology need to know the differences between DIP and SMD LED pixels.

For LED displays which use DIP technology, each of the LED pixels are separate from each other. The red, blue, and green LED diode are clearly visible for each individual LED pixel whereas in SMD technology the RGB LED diodes are contained in one housing.

The main benefit of DIP technology in the past was brightness. A DIP driven display in the past would produce about 4 lumens per LED pixel. This made DIP a better option for bright environments which is why people today consider DIP technology perfect for outdoor solutions. In most cases today, DIP is still the better option for outdoor use compared to SMD modules. However, the Usurface III outdoor LED display product we have available is pioneering SMD 10,000 nit brightness which stands up to its DIP counterpart.

Check out SMD in our next episode in the LED 101 series.
