LED 101 – LED Origins

LED technology has come a long way in recent years. Seeing as we’re in the context of LED display industry we focused specifically on the origins of LED video wall (otherwise known as display) technology.

LED displays originated from the days of the marquee’s and single bulbs lined for scoreboards and flashy signs on sides of buildings. Soon the amber or red LED diode was invented and processing of content became a thing bringing to life the first practical LED display in 1968.

It wasn’t until the late 80’s that LED displays could achieve full colour. This was achieved with the invention of the blue and green LED diodes which as we all know now red, blue, and green (RGB) can create any colour under the sun.

The way the world thought about LED display technology was changed in the late 90’s thanks to the creative mind of a stage designer named Mark Fisher who designed the event backdrop for U2’s “Popmart” tour. Fisher realized that with long viewing distances, pixel spacing could achieve very large images with great brightness, especially when viewed at night.

Welcome to the digital era.
